What's the Best Trampoline for Kids [March 2019]

Saturday, March 16, 2019

People always ask, "what's the best trampoline for my kids?"  Like most things, it comes down to a few key questions.  First, how many kids do you have?  Second, how old are your kids?  Third, how do you plan on using your trampoline?  Finally, what features do you want?  By answering these questions you can find a solid trampoline that will last your family for years to come.

My oldest son was about three years old when we got our first trampoline, and our family hasn't looked back since!  With two boys now, we've spent many hours in our basement jumping on the trampoline.  It's something that has helped my wife and I maintain some sanity during the long days, and it's always a great way for the kids to get out some energy.

Anyway, here's my guide to help you find the best trampoline for kids - please enjoy and leave me a comment below!

How Many Kids Will Be Jumping?

This is the first, and most important, question that you have to ask yourself.  If you only have one or two kids this will be an easier decision.  In that case a small 7' trampoline will probably be best for your kids.  You may want to go larger and get a 10' model to be safe.  That will allow some room for expansion as your kids, or family, grow over the years.

You'll also have to ask yourself exactly how you'll be using the trampoline, but I'll get more into this a bit later.

If you have one or two kids jumping, one of the following options should be good for you:

How Old are Your Kids?

The age of your kids always drives a lot when it comes to buying decisions.  Ideally you want to buy something suitable for your kids at their current age, but you also don't want your money to go to waste, so you want to find something that's sized up a little bit from what they actually need.

Trampolines are no different.  With different sizes and construction types come different capacities and weight limits.  It's important to keep the age and size of your kids in mind when choosing the best trampoline for your family.  Older kids need larger trampolines, not only for the additional weight capacity but also for the increased jumping room.  They can really pack a punch once they're older if they accidentally knock into eachother!

How Do You Plan on Using It?

This question gets me some odd looks sometimes.  People don't always understand what I mean so please allow me to explain.  What kind of family are you?  Will you be using the trampoline a lot at parties?  Will the neighbor kids always be over at your house, adding to the overall number of kids and duration of use?  These are important things to keep in mind as you search for the best trampoline for your kids.

If you have a more active social calendar then you should plan on buying a model that's built for heavier duty, and you should also probably buy a bigger unit.  For more than two kids, or for kids older than seven or eight, you'll probably want to invest in at least a 15' model.  This will ensure that your kids and their friends always have enough space to jump and have fun safely.

What Features Do You Want?

It may seem odd that I'm putting this last, but realistically speaking it is one of the lowest-priority factors when it comes to finding the best trampoline for your kids and family.  Family size or age of kids aren't things that you can easily change, whereas your kids can probably survive if their trampoline doesn't have a basketball hoop.

That said, the basketball hoop is really one of the main features you'll get when looking for a trampoline.  Virtually all units these days come with safety netting out of the box, and so that's not even really considered a feature.  And there aren't a ton of other features to speak of.  The majority of them pertain to safety (as in the sprial spring design now used in some models or enhancements to the netting system).  Perhaps now you see why this is at the end of my list (or perhaps it's just my bias really showing through).

In Conclusion

So there you have it.  The question of the best trampoline for your kids comes down to several factors and will differ from family to family.  But, by considering the size of your family, the age of your kids, the type of usage you expect and the features you're after, you'll be able to buy with confidence knowing that you've considered all the important things.
